In the previous lecture, you learned how to set the VM ID, Name, and Node in the General tab of the #ProxmoxVE web console.
Now, we explore the second step of VM creation, the #OS tab, where you specify the type of Guest Operating System to be installed and select the ISO image uploaded previously.
This step directly impacts the performance, stability, and future management of your VM, making accurate selection vital.
Choosing the correct #GuestOS type contributes to virtualization driver optimization and hardware compatibility, while precise #ISOimage specification ensures a successful OS installation.
This post analyzes each setting in the OS tab in detail and provides tips for optimal VM configuration.
1. Accessing the OS Tab and Key Settings
This is the second phase of the VM Creation Wizard.
A. Key Settings in the OS Tab
Clicking the Next button from the General tab moves you to the OS tab, where the following three main settings appear:
ISO Image: Select the ISO image file of the operating system to be installed on the virtual machine.
Guest OS: Choose the type and version of the operating system to be installed.
Do not use any media: Select this when creating a VM without an ISO file (e.g., creating from a template or network installation).
2. Selecting ISO Image: Specifying Installation Media
Choose the previously uploaded ISO file here.
A. Specifying ISO Storage
Select the #Storage (e.g.,
local) where the ISO image is stored from the dropdown menu.A list of ISO files uploaded to the selected storage will appear.
B. Choosing the ISO File
Select the specific #ISOfile from the dropdown (e.g.,
ubuntu-22.04.3-live-server-amd64.iso).
Tip: If the ISO file does not appear in the list, refer to the previous lecture to verify it was uploaded to the correct storage.
3. Selecting Guest OS Type: Optimizing VM Performance
Selecting the right Guest OS type is decisive for VM performance and stability.
A. Understanding the OS Type List
Type: Categories like #Linux, #Windows, Solaris, or Other.
Version: Specific versions of the selected OS.
B. Guest OS Selection Criteria
Accurate Type Selection: Choose the item that best matches the OS type and version you are installing.
Example: To install #Ubuntu Server 22.04, set Type to
Linuxand Version to5.x - 2.6 Kernelor the latest corresponding version.
Virtualization Driver Optimization: Proxmox automatically provides or configures optimized virtualization drivers (#virtio) based on the selected OS type. Incorrect selection may cause performance degradation or driver issues.
4. CD/DVD Drive Settings (Advanced Options)
The OS tab contains Advanced options that are hidden by default.
A. Enabling Advanced Options
Check the Advanced checkbox at the top of the screen to reveal additional settings.
While #CD/DVD drive settings will be covered in detail in a later lecture, they are briefly mentioned here.
B. SCSI Controller (SCSI Controller)
The default is LSI 53C895A, which is generally suitable for Linux Guest OS.
For Windows Guest OS, selecting the #VirtIO SCSI controller can optimize performance.
Once you have finished the OS tab settings, click the Next button to move to the System tab. In the next post, we will cover how to configure detailed #System hardware settings for the VM.
