💻 Proxmox VE Course III-A-7. Assigning Static IPs to VM/CT (Excluding DHCP)

📍 Network Milestones: Why is a Static IP Important?

Most services operating within a virtualized server receive continuous access from external or internal devices

If the IP address of a service is set to a dynamic DHCP method, a major disaster could occur where the address changes upon reboot, causing web services to stop or database connections to break

Therefore, you must assign a 'Static IP' to server-side Virtual Machines (VM) and Containers (CT) to eliminate address volatility

In this #lecture, we will take an in-depth look at the #method of manually determining network addresses in a Proxmox VE environment without the help of a DHCP server

1. Principles of Static IP Assignment and Preparation

A static IP is a "promised address" manually assigned by a network administrator

A. IP Conflict Prevention Strategy

  • If two devices use the same IP within a network, communication will be paralyzed

Before assigning a static IP, you must verify if the address is already in use via a ping test

This is the first step in protecting #data integrity and network stability

B. Collecting Essential Network Information

  • To set up a static IP, the following four pieces of information are essential:\

  1. IP Address to assign (e.g., 192.168.0.100)\

  2. Subnet Mask (e.g., 255.255.255.0 or /24)\

  3. Gateway Address (e.g., 192.168.0.1)\

  4. DNS Server Address (e.g., 8.8.8.8)

C. Understanding the #Virtualization Network Layer

  • Proxmox's bridge (vmbr) acts as a virtual switch

Static IP packets configured in a VM or CT are delivered to the external #network through this virtual switch

2. Setting a Static IP in a Virtual Machine (VM)

Since a VM has an independent BIOS/UEFI and kernel, the standard practice is to configure the settings within the VM's OS rather than the Proxmox GUI

A. Linux VM (Ubuntu/Debian) Configuration

  • Modern distributions primarily use Netplan

Edit the /etc/netplan/00-installer-config.yaml file, change dhcp4 to no, and enter the static IP in the addresses section

Applying the settings with the netplan apply command will immediately give it a fixed address

B. Windows VM Configuration

  • Open the IPv4 properties in the adapter settings of the 'Network and Sharing Center' and enter the address manually

In a Windows Server environment, this process is a crucial step directly linked to service #performance

C. Utilizing Cloud-Init in Proxmox GUI

  • If manual configuration is cumbersome, use the 'Cloud-Init' feature

By entering the IP settings in the Proxmox menu in advance, the static IP is automatically injected when the VM is created, drastically shortening the installation time

3. Setting a Static IP in a Container (LXC) (The Easiest Method)

Since containers share the kernel with the host, Proxmox provides powerful and intuitive IP control directly through the GUI

A. Configuration During Creation

  • Select 'Static' for IPv4 settings in the 'Network' tab of the Container Creation Wizard

You can enter the IP address and subnet (CIDR notation, e.g., /24) right there

The gateway can also be designated at the same time

B. Modifying an Operating Container

  1. Select the target CT -> Go to the 'Network' menu\

  2. Select the existing interface and click 'Edit'\

  3. Modify the #IP information and click OK; the address changes in real-time without touching the container's internal OS

C. Convenience of #Software Defined Networking

  • This feature of LXC brings enormous #resource savings when managing addresses for dozens of containers

Operators can control the entire address system from the GUI without needing to access the terminal for each one

4. Advanced Tips and #Optimization for Static IP Operation

Additional considerations for perfect network operation:

A. Redundancy of DNS Settings

  • Even if you use a static IP, if the DNS for domain resolution fails, the service will be paralyzed

It is advantageous for #stability to always mix the primary DNS (ISP) and secondary DNS (Google/Cloudflare)

B. Creating an IP Management Ledger (IPAM)

  • Use Excel or a separate IP management tool to record which address was assigned to which VM

As the infrastructure grows, this record becomes the most powerful #infrastructure map for troubleshooting

C. Integration with #Network Security Policies

  • Now that you have assigned a static IP, you can apply sophisticated security policies, such as opening specific ports only for that IP in the Proxmox Firewall

Build a powerful whitelist security system that is impossible with dynamic IPs

Assigning a static IP is more than just entering an address; it is the core foundation that determines the reliability of virtualized services

I hope you build a rock-solid server infrastructure through accurate configurations
